Replication Vs Duplication – What’s the Difference and Does It Matter
Typical information products contain CDs and/or DVDs as part of the package. When working with a disc duplicator, you have to decide if you want to replicate or duplicate the discs you are going to produce. People want to know what is the difference between the two and does it matter? This article examines both methods and what it means for you.
CD/DVD duplication in its purest definition means copying discs. In fact, there are two different ways to copy a disk: replication and duplication.
Replication
From a glass master containing disk data, a metal pad is formed. The die is loaded into a molding machine and molten polycarbonate is injected into the mold, making the disc with the data stamped on the disc. A reflective aluminum layer is applied and the discs are printed with artwork.
Reproduction
From pre-made blank recordable discs, data is “burned” onto the discs one by one. The process takes several minutes per disc depending on the speed of the recorder and the amount of information you are recording.
Does it matter?
Some people will tell you not to duplicate the audio or video, just replicate it. Others say there is no difference. There is no data difference between a processed duplication and a glass mastered replica disk.
But, there are some differences and sometimes they have an impact. The reality has more to do with the playback equipment than the manufacturing process. Older “set-top” DVD players (hooks to your TV) sometimes have problems playing duplicate discs, but rarely have problems with replicated discs (rarely doesn’t mean never).
Industry experts estimate that of the currently installed disk base (computers and drives), approximately 98% of CD drives will play duplicate CDs and approximately 90% of DVD drives will play duplicate DVDs. Recordable media are somewhat vulnerable to sunlight.
Impression
No matter where you go, your records should have a label. Why? This way, people will know which side is up and which side is the read side of your disc. Replicated disks are usually silkscreened. Duplicated discs are usually thermally printed or labeled on paper.
The ultimate decision is of course yours whether your disks will be replicated or duplicated. You will need to weigh the larger upfront cash commitment with replication against your ability to sell your product and the potential differences between replicated and duplicated disks.
