Dallas (Season 5) DVD Review
Nominated for 18 Emmys and 15 Golden Globes over its thirteen seasons, Dallas is the 1,000-pound gorilla of the prime-time drama/soap opera genre. Premiering in 1978 as a five-part miniseries, the series combines the classic sex and innuendo of boilerplate afternoon soap operas with the freewheeling adventure of Texas wildcats and wealthy capitalist oil barons. The explosive combination of frenzied love affairs and high-stakes business deals struck a chord with both men and women, prompting CBS to make Dallas the centerpiece of its Friday night programming (back when people watched actually Friday night TV). As a result, Dallas became one of the most successful television series in history. In fact, the famous episode “Who shot JR?” (“A House Divided” Air Date: 03/21/1980) still holds its spot as the second most-watched TV show of all time (MASH’s season finale is #1). With arguably the most memorable TV villain ever created, it’s no surprise that Dallas held either No. 1 or No. 2 on the Nielsen charts for most of the decade of the 1980s.
Without a doubt, Dallas’ unparalleled success and popularity was largely due to Larry Hagman and his portrayal of JR Ewing. Hagman’s real-life Texas roots, unique charm, and unreserved commitment to his craft have helped create one of history’s most lovable villains, and his betrayal is on full display in season five. Although JR is a vindictive cutthroat, audiences come to love his sinister smile as a result of a one-sided business deal and/or a selfish act of calculated revenge. In stark contrast, JR’s brother, Bobby (Patrick Duffy), rebalances Ewing’s karma with his American smile and impeccable character. Patrick Duffy brings his own charming style to the small screen, and it makes for an interesting clash of personalities.
The Dallas (Season 5) DVD features some of the best episodes of the series. The former focus on Sue Ellen’s attempt to leave J.R. once and for all. With Dusty and Clayton Farlow by her side, Sue Ellen (Linda Grey) begins a new life at the Southern Cross Ranch in San Angelo. The ensuing war between the two over baby John Ross makes it one of the most enjoyable prime-time dramas ever produced. The on-screen chemistry between Hagman and Gray is nothing short of magical. They manage to portray a believable love-hate relationship between husband and wife, and it’s one of the ongoing conflicts that propelled the show to the top of Nielsen’s ratings for nearly fourteen years (this making it the longest-running prime-time drama in television history.
