Why Arrested Development is the Best Show on Television
The worst show ever shown on your TV.
Let me start by saying that the title of this essay is sarcastic, and if you don’t like looking like an idiot by not knowing this, or just have no sense of humor in general, then Arrested Development is definitely not a show you would like to enjoy. Now that I figured that out and you’re still reading this, good job, you’ve just taken the first step to discovering why Arrested Development is the exact opposite of what this essay suggests. Arrested Development is a character-driven comedy that debuted on November 2, 2003 and ended shortly after on February 10, 2006, after only 53 episodes on the air. Although the show received worse treatment from the network than a red-haired stepson, it has garnered a huge cult following and is now being made into a feature film. During its television run, Arrested Development managed to be widely regarded as the best television show of all time in the eyes of many critics.
The show won six Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series. It also received twenty Emmy Award nominations as well as a Golden Globe and a spot on Time Magazine’s 100 Greatest TV Shows of All Time, a great achievement for a show that only ran for 53 episodes. Arrested Development defied the rules of television, consistently breaking the mold of what people expected from a television show, and arguably changed television forever. The show ignored the traditional half-hour comedy format, improving on it in every way, and wasn’t afraid to take the risks it felt was necessary. Its incredible cast made even the most absurd characters believable, and above all, its amazing plot and consistently entertaining writing made Arrested Development the best show to ever grace our airwaves…. .. easily.
Whether you’re a dedicated Arrested Development fan or have only seen an episode or two, the acting consistently stands out as one of the show’s brightest achievements. The cast of Arrested Development, whether they were famous before it started, or weren’t big, have all become huge stars. Most notably, Michael Cera, whose audition tape was airmailed to Fox, and was later cast as George-Michael. Since being cast in Arrested Development, Michael Cera has become a breakout star, being cast in hit films such as Superbad. Jason Bateman, although a bit of a star before the show aired, also became a huge star along with costar Will Arnett.
Series creator Mitch Hurwitz had 3 weeks to put together the cast, and although he said “There’s no way to get this cast right…it’s impossible…these are all such difficult roles to cast.” The cast was chosen and Mitch Hurwitz never looked back. “In any case, one person was right for the role. They are so good.” One of the main challenges of a character-driven comedy is…well…the characters. The cast of Arrested Development does such an incredible job of playing a believable family that as a viewer you have no idea just how utterly repulsive and unrelated these characters would be. The cast of Arrested Development play their roles so well that if you saw them on the street you’d probably expect them to be saying one of their famous catchphrases or having the exact same personality they have. in the series. In addition to the main cast, the supporting cast and guest stars were always entertaining and never afraid to poke fun at themselves as long as it meant laughing. Famous actors from Julia Louis-Dreyfus to Charlize Theron have starred on the show and all contributed to what makes this show amazing.
The guest stars have never been afraid to joke about themselves or the past work they’ve done. During a guest appearance for Dan Castellaneta, the man who voices Homer in “The Simpsons,” he said Homer’s famous catchphrase “D’oh.”, which struck me immediately helped identify it as Homer’s voice, and elicited a laugh. Another example of this subtle humor that only people who know the actors who play these roles would understand is when the main character, Michael, was on a date with his supposed British girlfriend Rita, played by Charlize Theron (who is American). The pair had just gone out to see a movie when Rita remarked, “I hate it when they hire Yanks to play Brits, it always shows.” It’s these subtle lines of comedy that make the show rewarding and consistently entertaining to watch. On top of all that, each of the characters, including the series’ narrator, played by Ron Howard, has something unique and interesting to bring to the table. From Jason Bateman’s portrayal of the fair and level-headed son, to Will Arnett’s overly dramatic (and gruesome) magician, to David Cross’ consistently hilarious physical humor and dialogue that can be confused with a lot of different things, the characters and the actors who play them, can carry this show on their own, even if you disregard all the other amazing aspects of this show.
While I could forever write about acting, there are still so many aspects of this show that made it the best show on television, and still the best to this day. One of the main things that made Arrested Development the amazing show that it was was its ability to take whatever risks the creators saw fit, to create a consistently entertaining television show. There were risks, like controversial jokes, such as “My husband is dying, I’ll get all the attention, like Superman’s wife got.”, as well as risks like getting more swear words. than any other network television show. On top of all this, there were some very controversial themes in the plot, such as incest and the war in Iraq.
Perhaps the biggest risk the show’s creators had to take was the show’s specific presentation and style, in terms of finding loyal viewers and keeping its ratings high enough to survive. The creators took a huge risk choosing to make a show with such unrelatable characters, as well as a plot that can only be understood by the most loyal viewers, and a format that is best understood when watched. on DVD “back to back”. go back”. To the average viewer, all of these factors can seem like huge flaws, and probably are if you don’t watch the show regularly or enjoy TV other than as a source of repetitive reality shows and of sitcoms that don’t require you to think or use your mind in any way other than to keep your eyes peeled long enough to see who’s been elected to the island where some strangers are stranded in that particular season.
However, for someone who loves smart comedies and actually has a reason to watch a show every week and be constantly entertained by hilarious callbacks to other episodes or jokes that only a loyal viewer would understand, all aforementioned “flaws”, such as being unrelated characters, a confusing plot, and a format best enjoyed when watched back-to-back, are actually the show’s greatest strengths. Another huge risk for the show’s creators was the choice not to have a laugh track. Mitch Hurwitz’s decision not to include the laughs after the jokes “allows you to take lines that might otherwise be seen as just straight-up jokes, and make them realistic.” The show’s narrator is not prevalent in most TV shows and ties the plot together while being a major source of entertainment. This feature also informs the viewer and clears up any confusion about what the characters just said.
Lindsay: “Wasn’t she on the cover of Newsweek?”
Narrator: “She wasn’t.”
Another big risk for the series was its constant use of “stock footage” to help tie together plot threads and add a new layer of comedy just for comic relief. The overarching plot and how each new story was intertwined with something that happened in a previous episode made the show all it was. If those risks hadn’t been taken, Arrested Development might still be on TV, but it wouldn’t be worth mentioning, watching, or doing any major summative task. The risks were what made Arrested Development great and allowed every part of the series to work perfectly together. Without the risks on Arrested Development, there really would be no reward.
