Is the PS4 Really the Best Gaming Console? We Review, You Choose
If Sony was trying to make a statement with the release of its PlayStation 4 console, it did a good job. Contrary to much of the pre-game rhetoric and over-the-top talk, the PS4 seems to have delivered on its promise and is the most powerful console out there. It saw another redesign to its exterior and some major design changes to its Dual Shock controller. In addition, it has expanded memory and greatly increased the performance of its processors. These upgrades are clearly apparent and the PS4 offers stunning HD graphics that run smooth and lightning fast.
With well-equipped exclusive game titles, streaming access and multiplayer capabilities, PlayStation enthusiasts will most likely welcome the latest arrival with open arms. Not to mention that the price of this console is about $100 less than its ardent rival – the Xbox One. To date, the PS4 has made a remarkable entrance.
Performance: 5.0 / 5.0
The PS4 features a single-chip processor that combines an AMD “Jaguar” eight-core x86-64 processor with a 1.84 teraflop GPU. It is supported with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM and has a 500GB mechanical hard drive. Sony boasts that its new hardware allows it to perform ten times better than this latest PS3. That’s a pretty impressive feat.
Another nice touch is the fact that the PS4 comes with a 500GB drive. This extra space comes in handy when downloading movies and games from the PlayStation Market. If you ever feel pressed for space, don’t worry, as the hard drive can also be upgraded by DIYers without voiding the warranty.
The PS4’s HD graphics are stunning and the responsiveness of the console is currently unmatched. What’s even more impressive is the fact that this machine can perform at such a high level without feeling like a jet on a runway or overheating. Not to mention that all power is enclosed inside the unit; unlike the Xbox One which always attached it to the external power cord in an attempt to save space inside the console.
Features: 5.0 / 5.0
The PS4 comes in the same half-matte, half-gloss black exterior as the Xbox One. Even still, it has a completely different appearance. That’s because the PS4 sports a slim, sleek design and doesn’t look like an oversized mid-’80s VCR. I’m not saying the Xbox One is the ugly half-sister of the bunch, but it probably wouldn’t be. asked at the ball if the PS3 was available and consenting. So, for all of you who have just been offended by such a superficial statement, I know Mom always said, “It’s what’s inside that counts. And in this regard, I assure you that the PS4 would always be the first guest to dance.
The PS4 has seen some changes to its components, and because of this, none of your old PlayStation peripherals will work – imagine that.
Although the PS4 does not have retroactive capabilities to play your PS3 titles, many previously owned games can be purchased at a considerable discount on their online store. The only catch – you’ll have to insert the old PS3 disc into the console when playing the online version.
Games purchased from PlayStation Store are downloaded directly to the hard drive and you don’t have to worry about the disc getting lost or scratched. The only negative is the fact that downloaded titles cannot be borrowed for the weekend or redeemed for credit at your local game store. As this form of buying games becomes more popular, stores like GameStop and other game retailers could take a hit – that or a seat next to Blockbuster in “Reminiscence Park.”
The new PS4 Dual Shock 4 has undergone a few physical changes that set it apart a bit from its previous counterpart. Some of the most notable changes are to the analog sticks; which have been spaced slightly further apart to avoid thumb collisions. They have also been designed with recessed tops and covered with a rubber coating to improve grip. The Dual Shock 4 also comes with an external speaker and headphone jack for your headphones, just be aware that it can only output stereo from the controllers connection – nonetheless, a nice touch. I would say one of the nicest design features of the Dual Shock 4 is the metallic touchpad on the face of the controller. It works similar to a laptop touchpad and is extremely smooth and responsive.
Although the Dual Shock 4 can be purchased and used on the PS3, older Dual Shock 3 controllers are not compatible with the PS4.
For those who already own a PS Vita, you can stream games from your PS4 over Wi-Fi to the portable unit. This creates a second viewing screen, much like the Wii U, and allows games to be played while someone else is using the TV. While that’s a nice feature, it probably wouldn’t justify buying the PS Vita on its own.
The PlayStation Camera is a nice touch, but it takes very little interaction to realize that it’s not as robust as the Xbox Kinect and doesn’t seem to have enough gameplay interaction to make it worth it. sadness. It also has a voice control feature, although very limited, and you might want to consider spending your money on another controller instead.
Multimedia: 4.4 / 5.0
The PS4 seems to have taken a step back from its earlier plans to be the all-in-one media hub. While it can still boast one of the best performing Blu-Ray and DVD players on the market, unlike the PS3 it can no longer play music files, CDs, or easily stream content from your PC. Instead, it seems to work more like a Roku. Still, if you only want to use the console to play games or have occasional access to Netflix and other movie apps, you’re set. Not to mention that movies are easy to access and can load very quickly. You can even use the PS4 to connect to social media and share some of your gameplay highlights – there’s nothing like showing off.
When it comes to music, Xbox and PS4 have their own channels. PlayStation provides “Music Unlimited”, for a nominal fee, of course. It works much like Pandora and allows users to listen to entire albums. The only weakness is that it’s a bit slower and less refined in recognizing the true genre of music or artist you desire. Along with this feature comes “Video Unlimited”. Another movie-based channel that is surprisingly deep on title selections and allows streaming to other devices as well.
The PlayStation online gaming community has seen great improvements in the interface and gameplay features. The only downside, much like on Xbox, PS4 users will now have to pay to access the multiplayer area. While this is a change from the PS3, where it was free, the experience has been vastly improved and will most likely be considered well worth the cost.
A handy feature of the PS4 is the iOS and Android app which allows users to log into the PlayStation Store and purchase and download games while away from home. Using this app, games can be automatically downloaded to the console when you are away from home and then ready to play once you arrive. Overall, the PS4 still has nice interaction and a variety of features in the multimedia department, but lacks the depth experienced with the PS3. Due to some of these complaints, Sony has taken notice and I imagine they will make some adjustments in their updates.
The final result: 4.9 / 5.0
The PS4 is $100 cheaper than the Xbox One, but even if you removed the Kinect component to bring the Xbox price down, the PS4 is much better value for money. Its performance is undeniable and even though the Xbox One is a well-built unit, until Microsoft fixes some performance issues, it won’t go alongside Sony.
As for the cons, the PS4 only comes with two front-facing USB ports. We thought that this design error also present with the PS3 would have been corrected, but apparently not. It also lacks some of the depth of gaming titles like the Xbox One, and still has it. However, it is well within reach and offers many exclusive titles and a promising future.
The PS4 is a powerful gaming console that gives gamers exactly what they are looking for; a seamless HD gaming experience with full functionality and control. Based on its undeniable performance, improved design, and price, Consumer High Five Reviews feels the first-round pick is a no-brainer.
