Good Computer Maintenance – Part Two
In our last part of the discussion on good computer maintenance, we will discuss backup, some free stuff and cleaning tips. All the good advice to properly maintain your computer.
save it
One maintenance task that remains crucial is backing up your data, especially if it’s related to business or finance. At the very least, manually copy this data to a recordable CD or DVD when it changes. More sophisticated options include using the more automated backup tools that come with Windows, a standalone backup program for networks such as the popular Dantz Retrospect Professional (www.dantz.com), or a web-based backup system such as the excellent IBackup (www. .ibackup.com).
Free stuff
A really interesting maintenance task is to check who is spying on you. If you download a lot of software, one or more programs may be monitoring your web browsing habits, which could slow you down. Such behavior naturally irritates people, and good contractors offer free software to weed out scammers. The best overall standalone program for this is Spybot Search and Destroy by Patrick M. Kolla (www.safer-networking.org).
Another fun and free software maintenance program is WinPatrol (www.winpatrol.com). Among other things, it shows you all the programs that load automatically each time you load Windows, allowing you to disable the ones you don’t want to run and that can slow you down, whether you’re using Windows XP, NT, 2000, ME, 98, or 95.
Cleaning Tips
Clean your monitor if it is stained. But stay away from glass cleaners… they can strip a monitor’s anti-glare finish. Use isopropyl alcohol or distilled water with a lint-free cloth. Wet the cloth first, then the monitor.
Periodically open your computer case to clean the dust. Every two years or more frequently if your PC is in a dusty area. This will help prevent heat buildup, which can shorten the life of system components.
Use either a handheld vacuum or a compressed gas dust collector. To minimize static electricity discharge, avoid old vacuum cleaners and brushes, and avoid the metal of any vacuum cleaner touching your PC. After vacuuming the inside of your PC, vacuum the front grill and your keyboard.
Before working inside a PC, ground yourself…turn off your computer, leave it plugged in, and touch an unpainted metal surface inside the PC. Your PC should be plugged into a grounded three-prong outlet, preferably on a dedicated circuit. Do not move a PC or connect/disconnect its cables while it is powered on unless they are plugged into a universal serial bus port.
If your mouse starts to misbehave, take it apart and clean it. Shake off dust or use a cleaning pad or compressed gas.
Finally, it is best not to smoke around your PC. Cigarette smoke can coat the innards of your PC in tar, shortening its lifespan.
