Where to start?

Well, you’re probably reading this from a Windows machine, so I’ll be developing Ubuntu. Ubuntu is backed by Canonical, a company created by Mark Shuttleworth, a South African-born multimillionaire, when he launched Thawte, the internet security certificate company. Linux is based on Unix, which was the first popular operating system (OS) with roots dating back to the 1970s.

Fueled by its backers, Ubuntu dominated Linux distribution listings overnight. Ubuntu’s slogan is “Linux for Human Beings” which captures the essence of what the project is trying to achieve: getting normal people to use Linux. This is no easy task with Microsoft having dominated the operating system market for over twenty years.

Ubuntu struggles though, with its easy-to-use Gnome interface and Nautilus file system (both open source projects, like Ubuntu). Ubuntu has integrated everything from the ground up, which makes it appealing to businesses, local governments, and the average user.

Did you like the Firefox web browser?

If you did, you are one of over 100 million people who do. Firefox is directly integrated into Ubuntu, with Evolution Mail (like Outlook Express). In fact, Ubuntu has a lot of things the everyday user needs: it can burn DVDs, CDs, play all your media, and more. It’s these features built in from a compact disc that make Ubuntu special.

Will it replace Windows?

The direct answer is no. If, like me, you have a lot of commercial (paid) software, Ubuntu can’t use it. The exception to this are some games like Doom and Quake that people have redesigned to run in Ubuntu. In most cases, this shouldn’t matter because Ubuntu’s software stacks do the work for you.

Worth a try, even if you don’t have a CD burner, Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) will send it to you for free, you pay nothing! It’s also cheaper to ship more than one CD, so you get copies to distribute.

The future of open source

Who knows? The future looks bright with Ubuntu knocking down the inhibitions people have about Linux. Linux has always been popular in universities, where all good ideas start! As to whether Linux will defeat Microsoft? I doubt it in the near future because Windows has exclusive distribution agreements with all major PC manufacturers, making Windows the default choice. However, not all monopolies last, and Firefox is an indication of the future.
