Home Theater Cables – How to Best Hide Speaker Cables
For most people with a home theater system installed in their home, cables are one of the biggest logistical challenges. The cords and cables of all the different components inevitably become a tangled and confusing mess, making it nearly impossible to change the configuration of your system or any of the components. Most families don’t take the time to organize and hide their cables to improve home theater aesthetics and security. With a few simple tweaks, your home theater wiring mess can be easily cleaned up and brought under control.
All home theater system components have a power cord that must find its way to a wall outlet, surge protector, or power strip. To keep power cords neat and tidy, use a label maker to identify the cord before plugging in your home theater components. It will help you when you need to know which jack to pull to move your speaker system or to replace your DVD player.
To clean up tangles and clutter caused by cables constantly wrapping and unwinding around each other, start by unplugging everything, including the cables that connect each component to the others, and separate them. Figure out exactly where you want each component to go, then reinstall them and carefully route the cables without twisting them around each other. You may need to write reminders to know where everything is if you are not used to setting up the theater. Use twist ties or zip ties to cables every foot or so when there is more than one cable running in the same direction to keep them from tangling and getting out of control. This same organization can be applied to power cords that terminate in the same power outlet.
If your home theater is configured such that some of the wiring must exit from behind an entertainment cabinet or floor standing speakers, it is recommended that you use some sort of cable cover to ensure that these cables are not snagged by people walking. or caught by young children or pets. To keep power cords out of sight and safe from tampering, use a cable cover designed to run along the wall and keep your cables protected and covered. These cable covers can be perfect wherever your cables are lying around in the open. If you are building your home theater from scratch, you can have the installer install the wiring in the wall or molding the room the same way. You won’t have to worry about tripping hazards or your new pup chewing on your power cords if the cords are neatly hidden and out of the way.
Another potential problem is your home theater speakers, as you might want speakers in the room with speaker cables becoming a huge hassle. To limit this problem, the best option, although complicated, is to run the speaker wiring through the walls. This keeps them from hanging down or getting in the way, and if you have the necessary tools and skills, you can run your speakers just about anywhere in the room.
Cleaning home theater wiring doesn’t have to be a chore. With a few simple changes and proper storage, you can have a clean and safe home theater room for your family.
