Movie Review – Whiteout (2009)

I’m a big fan of Kate Beckinsale and also of Shawn Doyle, who plays the brother in the big series Big Love. This movie, while falling off a little towards the second half, was a good movie overall and would be a great pick at your Saturday night dorm movie fest or something to do when your friends get together. What it lacked in originality it made up for in 2 hours well produced, well written, paced, which I personally enjoyed.

Kate, as a U.S. Marshal stationed in Antarctica, must track down a killer on the loose. It’s billed as the first kill in the frozen south, and the bodies begin to line up when they discover the killer has found treasure 20 feet below the ice worth murdering. At first I thought this movie was a supernatural thriller, but let me suppress that premise right off the bat. There are no ghosts lurking in the snowdrift. It’s just the nature of greed and dissatisfaction at work in the human soul.

With the twists and turns of a typical murder thriller, Whiteout does a great job of keeping you on your toes, even if you can spot plot developments a mile ahead. Maybe they thought that since it was filmed in the middle of a snowstorm, they didn’t need to be more creative.

All in all, the Whiteout movie is a great way to pass the time. Buckle up, it’s going to be a fun ride.
