Sony VAIO VPCF1290X – The Customizable Laptop
The Sony VAIO VPCF1290X is Sony’s second most customizable laptop. It was released after many online publications started noticing that Sony was very rigid when it came to customizing their electronics. That’s why users can customize the Sony VAIO VPCF1290X and create the multimedia and gaming laptop of their dreams. The price range is $999.99 to $2,934.97. Let’s see what options we have and how much each costs.
Let’s start with the processor, the main part. The cheapest version of the Sony VAIO VPCF1290X comes with an Intel Core i7 740QM processor running at a very good speed of 1.73 GHz (Turbo Boost technology can boost it up to 2.93 GHz). However, you can have the Intel Core i7 820QM CPU (running at 1.73 GHz). With Turbo Boost technology enabled, you can run it at 3.06 GHz. This upgrade only costs $200 more. You get an original copy of Windows 7 Home operating system on 64-bit architecture for free. However, you have to pay $150 for Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) operating system. The standard hard drive is a fairly basic and small 320 GB unit (spinning at 5400 rotations per minute). By contrast, a 256GB SSD (solid-state drive) will cost you $525 and a 500GB hard drive spinning at 7200 rotations per minute, $105.
The cheapest Sony VAIO VPCF1290X comes with 4GB (two 2GB sticks) of DDR 3 RAM running at 1333MHz, but you can get 8GB (two 4GB sticks) of DDR 3 RAM on a 1333 MHz frontside bus for $300. Considering the price, we bought the 4GB version. You can also replace the standard CD/DVD reader/writer with a Bluray Disc reader + writer for an additional $160. When it comes to the graphics card, things get a little complicated. The standard edition comes with an Nvidia GeForce 310 M graphics card (with 512 MB of video RAM). However, if you pick up this one, you’ll only be able to get the 16.4″ VAIO display (maximum resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels). So if you want Full HD capabilities and you want the VAIO Full 16.4″ HD (up to a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels), you should get the Nvidia GeForce 330M video card (boasting 1GB of video RAM) for an additional $50. Don’t forget to add an extra $100 for HD viewing.
Software can be quite expensive. So expensive? Looked. If you take the base configuration, they require you to purchase the Adobe bundle ($448). And if you want to change Microsoft Office 2010 Starter edition with Microsoft Office 2010 Professional edition, you need to add extra $350. Everyone needs antivirus software, that’s why they included Norton Internet Security 2010 for free (with only 30 days trial period). And yes, after 30 days, it’s gone! If you want the Backstage VIP Protection suite, you need to withdraw an additional $100 from your pocket.
